Hand-in-hand with the Consumerization of IT is the rise of “Bring-Your-Own-Technology” (BYOT). We are using this term, rather than the popular BYOD, as it is not just about mobile devices, but also personal applications, clouds, services, and data within the enterprise. Our research shows a growing number of companies preparing and piloting initiatives, often as one aspect of a shift to cloud services. Key drivers within the enterprise have been travelling executives, board members, and knowledge workers who would like to leverage the portability and easy to use these devices offer when interacting with business software and content. In addition many of these same users meld personal cloud services with corporate data in order to facilitate easy of access to work documents and improve their own productivity. In order to meet these demands, IT organizations have struggled to manage the ever-expanding number of consumer devices that contain company data. This Strategic Perspective sets a level on what the enterprise IT and user concerns are with BYOT and Data Management, and suggests several Best Practices for IT and Business leaders to consider when conducting their own evaluations of BYOT policies.
