At the end of 2006, we looked at what was then an emergent trend in IT planning, spending, and management: the growth of “tactically strategic” investments instead of so-called “big bang” projects. After decades of massive business IT investments, this was the beginning of a fundamental shift in how IT resources were acquired, deployed, and financed over time. In this Strategic Perspective, we look at why this trend toward relatively small, tactical changes that enable ongoing, strategic business improvements has continued, and why this will be the standing order for business IT investment through the foreseeable future.
